This guide to celestial navigation has grown from the author's experience gained through many years of teaching navigation. It is intended to answer the need for a quick, easy, and thorough explanation, with realistically worked problems, of the practice of celestial navigation at sea, using simple and inexpensive equipment.

Celestial Navigation is arranged in sections that are somewhat independent. In this way the book satisfies the needs of various users whose experience and requirements may differ.

Celestial navigation, using the sextant, an accurate timepiece, and the Nautical Almanac, reamins an extremely important method of navigation on a yacht, ocean liner, or man-of-war. The navigator will certainly use electronic techniques when they are available and the rules permit, but he or she still can perform alone quite independently of electronics. If electronic devices fail, celestial navigation is a naural substitute and, in many cases, is more accurate.
