To demonstrate compliance the Master of a ship using separate fuel oils to comply with the provisions must make a record of each fuel changeover operation. Further there is a requirement for the Master to make a record in a log book.

This "Marine Fuel Sulphur Record Book" is approved by the United Kingdom´s Maritime & Coastguard Agency (MCA) for use on United Kingdom ships when recording the use of marine fuel oil in accordance with the requirements of Annex VI of MARPOL and for ships at berth in United Kingdom ports in accordance with EU Directive 1999/32/EC, as amended by Directive 2005/33/EC regarding the sulphur content of marine fuels.
